Zithromax, commonly known as azithromycin or Z-Pak, is an antibiotic drug used to treat bacterial infections. You cannot use it to treat viral infections like the flu or cold or fungal infections. Go for medical check up to ensure that a bacterium is the source of the infection you have before using this medicine. Being a wide range antibiotic, you can use this drug to treat infections like respiratory infections, skin and ear infections, and sexually transmitted infections. It usually works by stopping the illness causing bacteria from multiplying and hinders them from producing the proteins they need for their growth. Once this is done, the remaining bacteria die on their own or are killed by the body’s immune system.
The dosage of azithromycin might differ according to the kind of infection you have but it is usually taken orally as a tablet or as a suspension. Your health care provider might advice you to take the medicine for longer or shorter period depending on the diagnosis he/she gives you. In most cases, the drug is to be taken once a day usually within 5 days with a meal or before or after meals.
Your doctor might also advice you to take a double dosage when starting the medication if your infection is adverse. It is important to follow the directions issued by your doctor. If you get the drug from a pharmacy, read the leaflet that comes with the medicine and follow the exact instructions written there. Ensure you take zithromax at the same time each day to aim for the best results. If you don’t feel better after commencing medication, inform your doctor.
The dosage is administered depending on your reaction to medication and the condition you have.
Store the medicine at room temperature away from direct sunlight or any other source of heat or moisture. Dispose of any suspension left after 10 days.
Zithromax has been known to have various side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Other uncommon side effects include dizziness, tiredness, yellowing of skin and swelling. Some rare and serious side effects like heart problems, shortness of breath, rapid swelling, anaphylaxis and liver disease have also been reported. Inform your doctor in case of any of these side effects. Use a sunscreen when you go out while using this medicine. It can make your skin more sensitive and therefore more susceptible to sunburn.
While using this medicine, you should not take magnesium or aluminum as this will reduce the absorption level of zithromax into your system. Any anti acids that contain these two elements should not be taken within at least two hours before taking zithromax. Inform your doctor if you have any other diseases. Although the drug has not been reported to harm an unborn child or an infant, it is best to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating.
Finish the entire dosage even if you start to feel better before the dose is over. Stopping midway can lead to recurrence of the bacterial infection with resistance to the medicine. In case you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one then call your doctor for further instructions. Do not take double the dosage in an effort of trying to make up for the missed one.
Tell your doctor any other medicine you may be using to avoid mixing azithromycin with other interacting medicine. Although diarrhea could be a side effect of azithromycin, it could also be a new infection. Call you doctor if your diarrhea is too watery or if it has blood stains just to be on the safe side.
Do not give zithromax to infants younger than 6 months old. Do not take double the dosage as this can lead to fatality. If you are allergic to azithromycin do not take the medicine. Inform your doctor so he/she can give another alternative medication. If an allergic reaction occurs, contact your physician with immediate effect. Do not use alcohol while on this medication. Keep this and all other medicine out of children’s reach. If you overdose on this drug, call an emergency number or your doctor immediately.
